PSFC/JA-03-02 Superconducting options for final optics magnets for the Heavy Ion Driver in Inertial Fusion Energy

چکیده

The environment close to the chamber in inertial fusion confinement imposes severe constrains on magnets used for final focusing magnets needed for the heavy ion driver. Space is at a premium, requiring close proximity of adjacent magnets, making magnet integration imperative. In addition, the high radiation flux and heating rate imposes requirements that are as stringent as in magnetic fusion. In this paper, the options for final focusing magnet topologies are described. Implication of using both high Tc and conventional low temperature superconductors are investigated. The use of HTS material may offer an opportunity for a fundamentally different approach to magnet construction leading to either lower cost or reduced maintenance.

Development of Superconducting Quadrupoles for Heavy Ion Fusion

Multi-beam heavy-ion accelerators are considered as promising drivers for inertial fusion energy. The High Current Experiment (HCX) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) will test driver-scale beam dynamics in a single transport channel. Single bore, NbTi superconducting quadrupoles are being developed for the HCX, taking into account their possible use as modules in a quadrupole arra...

Development of a compact superconducting rotating-gantry for heavy-ion therapy

An isocentric superconducting rotating-gantry for heavy-ion therapy is being developed [1]. This rotating gantry can transport heavy ions having 430 MeV/u to an isocenter with irradiation angles of over ±180°, and is further capable of performing fast raster-scanning irradiation [2]. A layout of the beam-transport line for the compact rotating-gantry is presented in Fig. 1. The rotating gantry ...

Critical technical issues and evaluation and comparison studies for inertial fusion energy reactors

The critical technical issues, evaluation and comparison of two inertial fusion energy (IFE) r~actor design concepts developed in the Prometheus studies are presented. The objectives of this study were (1) to identify and characterize the critical issues and the R&D required to resolve them, and (2) to establish a sound basis for future IFE technical and programmatic decisions by evaluating and...

بهبود بهره انرژی با پیکربندی سوخت DT+D3He در رآکتور گداخت هسته‌ای با راه‌انداز باریکه یونی سنگین

It is expected that advanced fuels be employed in the second generation of nuclear fusion reactors. Theoretical calculations show that in such a fuel, a high plasma temperature about 100 keV is a requisite for reaction rate improvement of nuclear fusion. However, creating such a temporal condition requires a more powerful driver than we have today. Here, introducing an optimal fuel configuratio...

Conceptual Design of Superconducting Quadrupole Arrays for Heavy-ion Fusion

Extensive studies have been performed to optimize the design of superconducting quadrupole arrays for beam transport in future heavy-ion fusion accelerators. In these arrays 20 or more quadrupole coils are densely packed with their axes aligned in parallel. Field strengths between 3 and 5 tesla at the inner coil diameters have been investigated. The aperture of the individual quadrupoles has be...
